LOVE IS A DIRTY WORD

at Z Below in San Francisco

Opening Night: Saturday November 11, 2017

Performance Run: November 11-November 26, 2017

San Francisco, CA: Tilted Field, an artist collective dedicated to creating and producing bold, rebellious, and intoxicating work, announces a three-week run in San Francisco of LOVE IS A DIRTY WORD, opening at Z Below in San Francisco on November 11, 2017.

The LA Times called its sold-out world premiere production in LA “inspiring,” and LA Weekly said “It’s beautiful.”

Created and performed by Giovanni Adams, with musical accompaniment by Arturo Lopez, LOVE IS A DIRTY WORD is about a young man finding redemption where he is deemed too dirty to love. This autobiographical piece is rooted in Mr. Adams’ experience as a black, queer, christian man crossing lines of identity, affinity and ideology. The songs are originals by Mr. Adams, arranged by accompanist Arturo Lopez.

LOVE IS A DIRTY WORD was developed and directed by San Francisco’s own Becca Wolff (The Roommate, SF Playhouse and Hookman, Encore/Z Space); designers include Melissa Trn (costumes) and Rachel Myers (set).

The show opens November 11 and will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm and Sundays at 7pm at Z Below, 470 Florida St. Tickets for LOVE IS A DIRTY WORD are $30 and available at http://www.zspace.org/love-is-a-dirty-word

Adams and Wolff began developing the show in the summer of 2015 when “...the perceived abject otherness of blackness was being made visible in the most horrific fashion. The spectacle of black death gone viral was a wake up call and a reminder that to be born black in America is to live with a heightened awareness of your out-of-placeness,” says Adams. “Safety can be real hard to find. This got me thinking about my own complex relationship to love and home. Is there such a thing as being too different — too dirty to love? That’s the seed of the story that we’re trying to tell. This story is a meditation of my childhood memories in Mississippi, accompanied with music and images. It traces my journey back home to reconnect with the little boy buried on the inside of me…a liberating act of love."
